By Allison St. Pierre, Manual Osteopath, Clinical Kinesiologist,
Wellness Coordinator at reactive wellness

As a Manual Osteopath, I get a lot of questions about my profession and statements like, “I’ve kind of heard about that but have no idea what it is” and “that’s all about bones right?”.

Well, I am here to set the record straight and tell you about what I do and how I do it. I have pulled together the most common questions I get when discussing Osteopathy in my community and will provide answers that will hopefully shed some light on this type of physical therapy.

What do you treat?

Each Manual Osteopath is slightly different depending on the specialty they wish to pursue. I treat persistent long term issues/pains that occur throughout the body. Within that, I have built a specialty in treating issues through the hips, SI joint and spine.

I also have spent a lot of time at running events and have built a following of long-distance runners who come to see me a few months before a long race to get their bodies ready for the event ahead.

How do you treat?

Each appointment is typically an hour where I will bring you into a private room, conduct an assessment that will include some questions about your physical issue, a physical assessment to try and find imbalances through the body that may be causing the issue, then a treatment. I have been educated in a wide variety of treatment techniques through my background as a Clinical Kinesiologist, Physiotherapy Assistant, Fascial Stretch Therapist and Manual Osteopath. The combination of all these different therapies coupled with a full hour of one-on-one, hands-on treatment is why I am effective at treating long term issues some people have been struggling with.

How many appointments will it take until I start seeing results?

The speed of recovery can vary from client to client. Some people see results within one appointment or two. I usually ask each client to see me once a week for 4-6 weeks then typically we can taper down to biweekly appointments or even monthly. At the end of each session, I provide education for at-home strategies and exercises to help clients maintain the relief received during treatments and to help them manage their symptoms independently. If it is taking longer than expected to get the results we want then we have a great team of therapists within reactive health who are always happy to help.

Can I get appointments covered under my insurance provider?

Yes, you can! I am a registered provider under Blue Cross and Johnson insurance and have had clients receive coverage under most other companies as well as long as their health care plan includes Osteopathy or Naturotherapy.

Can I still see my massage therapist/chiropractor/massage therapist if I am seeing you?

Yes, you can! My services effectively compliment other forms of physical therapy that can help boost you into recovery that much faster!
